This one day course will provide the delegate with a theoretical and practical understanding of the typical functions of a fire warden or fire marshal within a workplace. They will understand how fires start and propagate within buildings and will be able to assist with the development and implementation of emergency evacuation arrangements.


The course is suitable for anyone with responsibility for assisting with emergency evacuation safety arrangements in their workplace, including fire co-ordinators, fire wardens or marshals, supervisors or managers with fire safety responsibilities or health and safety representatives.


At the end of the course delegates will be able to:

  • —    Explain common causes of fire in the workplace.
  • —    Explain how fires spread within buildings.
  • —    Outline typical functions of the Emergency Response Team including Fire Wardens or Marshals and Fire Co-ordinators.
  • —    Identify the main requirements of the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005
  • —    Outline the main elements of a fire risk assessment.
  • —    Discuss the types of portable fire extinguishers and how they can be used in emergencies.
  • —    Outline the factors to be considered when developing emergency evacuation arrangements.
  • —    Outline the factors to be considered when developing emergency evacuation training and practice fire drills.
  • —    Assist in simulated and live emergency evacuation situations.
  • —    Develop arrangements for post evacuation evaluation and debriefing.

Candidates are awarded a Varis Training certificate
