COURSE DURATION

3 – 5 Days depending on the experience of the candidate and number on the course

For all personnel that operate forklifts

THE AIM OF THE TRAINING

To conform to the requirements of :

  • Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1974
  • Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.  (PUWER)
  • Lifting Operation & Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998.  (LOLER)
  • Approved Code of Practice L117
  • General Regulation in the use of a Forklift
  • Plus other relevant legislation.

THE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the course the Candidates will be able to answer questions on and perform the following:

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry & their responsibilities as a plant operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturers handbook for the particular machine to be used
  • To be able to locate & identify the major components of the machine & explain their function
  • To be able to locate & identify steering, driving and braking controls and explain their function
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks iaw manufacturers requirements
  • Safely mount/dismount the machine
  • Start & stop the machine and safely move the machine off & stop it safely
  • Configure the machine for travel & manoeuvre it safely laden/unladen in open & confined spaces
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
  • Manoeuvre the machine to the work area & correctly configure in readiness to carry out lifting & loading tasks
  • Carry out lifting & loading tasks
  • Lift & transfer loads accurately & safely at different locations
  • Load & unload external transport safely
  • Fit, adjust and or remove attachments
  • Demonstrate knowledge & understanding of loading & unloading procedures for machine transportation
  • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

1 instructor to 3 trainees

ASSESSMENT

Examination – Theory test.

Practical – Demonstration of skill.

This course is approved by the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme and successful  completion is recognised by the issue of a NPORS Card
