Professionals who will have responsibility for managing/participating in COSHH assessments within their work area

OBJECTIVES

To enable all personnel who are responsible for the management and conducting of COSHH assessments in the workplace to recognise the requirement for a COSHH assessment, and for them to carry out these assessments methodically and in conjunction with current legislation.

COURSE CONTENT

The course will cover all hazardous substances found in the workplace.

  • History of hazardous substances ( including a little look at statistics and figures from the big hazards of the last century)
  • Legislation and guidance – overview including HASWA; MHSWR; COSHH; DSEAR, and specific substance legislation (lead/asbestos etc)
  • Gathering information about substances; work involving substances and work areas where substances are used (including classification; identification of a hazardous substance; groups of people; vulnerable groups; effects of substances)
  • Evaluating the risks to health (low risk to high risk, mapping out where and how substances will affect health of workers; likelihood of exposure; potential for harm; overall risk factors)
  • Measures to comply with COSHH regulations (including selecting appropriate controls (hierarchy of control; principles of good practice; reasonable practicability); ensuring controls are used and maintained; planning for emergencies; monitoring exposure and health surveillance; Information, instruction, training and supervision)
  • Recording and reviewing the assessment – lots of practice examples giving scenario based exercises
  • Competence of COSHH assessor.

1 instructor: Max 10 trainees. Min 3 trainees

ASSESSMENT

This course contains a number of assessments to be completed by the delegates enabling them to carry out process based COSHH assessments in their workplace to meet the requirements of the Regulations.

CERTIFICATION

Candidates will receive a Varis Training Certificate
